East Of Eden Book Review
Set in Salinas Valley, California, nearly 50 years before its publishing date, Nobel Prize winner, John Steinbeck’s East of Eden, focuses on the Trask and Hamilton families. The book expresses its purpose through numerous motifs, themes, and morals (i.e. the faults of a patriarchy society). At the time the novel was written, a time of gender inequality, the major theme was good vs. evil; a retelling of the Old Testament's story of Cain and Able. Today, a major theme portrayed by the novel is gender politics in the United States. The female characters in the book uncover the dynamics of the post-World War II era, while simultaneously exposing the human nature of the male/female relationship in the 19th century. East of Eden first became a bestseller in 1952, and has recently been repopularized through Oprah Winfrey’s Book Club. Buy Here At Barnes and Nobles.
